A Better Lifestyle | 1枚のヨガラグが生まれるまで

2026年6月11~12日、A Better Lifestyleのヨガラグが生まれる場所を訪ねるため、インド南部タミル・ナードゥ州にある手織りラグ工場を訪問しました。

工場はコインバトール空港から車で約2時間半。山々に囲まれた自然豊かな地域です。今回の訪問は、ヨガーサナ世界大会とYogiFi工場の見学を終えた後、1泊2日の日程で行われました。

私たちが日々お届けしているヨガラグが、どのような人々の手によって、どのような想いで作られているのか。その背景を実際に見て、感じることが今回の目的でした。

自然から生まれる色

工場でまず案内されたのは、天然植物由来の染料づくりの工程でした。アナト、ターメリック、インディゴなど、自然の植物から作られる染料は、鮮やかでありながらどこか優しい色合いを生み出します。

発酵させた染料を大きな釜で煮出し、糸を丁寧に染めていく工程は、まるで伝統工芸の現場そのもの。効率だけを求める大量生産とは異なり、一つひとつの工程に人の手と時間がかけられていました。

特に印象的だったのは、職人さんが染料の原料となるハーブを指し「これはハーブティーだよ」と言い、飲み始めたこと！私たちがラグの色として見ているものは、もともと自然の恵みそのものなのだと改めて感じました。

自然の循環を大切にするものづくり

この工場では、染色後に残った植物の繊維や染料のカスも無駄にしません。それらは肥料として土へ還され、再び自然の一部となります。 ものづくりの過程で生まれたものを廃棄するのではなく、循環させる。その姿勢は、ヨガの教えにも通じる「自然との調和」を体現しているようでした。環境への配慮が特別な取り組みとして行われているのではなく、日常の一部として自然に根付いていることが印象的でした。

受け継がれる手織り文化

工場内では、職人さんたちが一枚一枚丁寧にラグを仕上げていました。訪問時には数十名規模の職人さんが働いていましたが、そこには慌ただしさはなく、穏やかな空気が流れていました。

完成したラグだけを見ると気づきにくいかもしれませんが、その一枚の背景には多くの人の技術と経験があります。

仕上げる人。

それぞれの工程が積み重なり、一枚のラグが完成していきます。

この工場が生まれた理由

今回特に心を動かされたのは、工場を立ち上げたオーナーのお話でした。お二人はもともとドイツ系企業でエンジニアとして働いていました。しかし、「この町にもう一度手織り文化を取り戻したい」という想いから起業を決意したそうです。

利益だけではなく、地域の伝統技術を守り、次世代へつないでいくこと。そして将来は学校をつくり、人材育成にも取り組みたいという夢を持っていることを知りました。その話を聞いたとき、この工場が作っているのはラグだけではないのだと感じました。

文化を守り、人を育て、未来へつないでいく。そんな大きなビジョンが、この場所にはありました。

ラグに織り込まれているもの

今回の訪問を通じて感じたのは、ラグは単なる製品ではないということです。

そこには地域の文化があり、職人さんの技術があり、自然への敬意があります。

そして未来への想いがあります。

A Better Lifestyleのヨガラグには、そのすべてが織り込まれています。私たちがラグを広げるとき、その一枚の背景には遠くインドの地で丁寧にものづくりを続ける人々の存在があります。

今回の滞在は1泊2日という短い時間でしたが、次回はもっと長く滞在し、職人さんたちの暮らしやものづくりへの想いをさらに深く知りたいと思いました。そして、その魅力を皆さまにもお届けできればと思っています。

Visiting the Handwoven Yoga Rug Factory in Tamil Nadu, India

In June 2026, we had the opportunity to visit the handwoven rug factory where A Better Lifestyle yoga rugs are made. Located in Tamil Nadu, in southern India, the factory is surrounded by beautiful mountains and nature, about a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Coimbatore Airport. The visit took place over two days following the Yogasana World Championship and a visit to the YogiFi factory. Our goal was simple: to better understand the people, craftsmanship, and values behind the yoga rugs we proudly share with our community.

Colors Born from Nature

One of the first things we explored was the natural dyeing process. The factory uses plant-based dyes derived from ingredients such as annatto, turmeric, and indigo. These natural materials create rich, beautiful colors while maintaining a deep connection to nature. We observed the entire process, from preparing and fermenting the dyes to dyeing yarn in large vats and carefully drying the colored threads. Unlike mass production, every step required time, patience, and skilled hands.

One moment that particularly surprised us was when a craftsman pointed to the dye and began drinking it saying it was “herbal tea". It was a simple reminder that the colors found in these rugs come directly from nature itself.

A Sustainable Approach to Manufacturing

What impressed us most was the factory’s commitment to sustainability. After the dyeing process, the remaining plant materials are not discarded. Instead, they are returned to the soil as natural fertilizer, creating a cycle in which nature gives and nature receives.

This philosophy of minimizing waste and working in harmony with the environment felt deeply aligned with the principles of yoga. Rather than treating sustainability as a marketing concept, it was simply part of everyday life and manufacturing.

Preserving a Tradition Through Craftsmanship

Throughout the factory, artisans worked carefully on each rug, paying close attention to every detail.

The atmosphere was calm, warm, and unhurried. Every rug passed through multiple skilled hands, from dyeing and weaving to finishing and stitching.

Watching the process reminded us that a handcrafted product carries something unique: the experience, dedication, and care of the people who create it. Each rug tells a story that cannot be replicated by machines.

The Story Behind the Factory

One of the most inspiring parts of our visit was learning about the founders. Before starting the company, both founders worked as engineers for a German corporation. However, they shared a vision of reviving the handweaving culture that once flourished in their hometown.

Their goal was not only to create beautiful products but also to preserve traditional craftsmanship and provide opportunities for future generations. They spoke passionately about their dream of establishing a school one day to train and support young artisans.

Listening to their story, we realized that this factory is creating much more than rugs. It is helping preserve culture, support local communities, and invest in the future.

More Than Just a Yoga Rug...

This visit reminded us that a yoga rug is far more than a product.

It carries the heritage of a region.

It reflects the skill of dedicated artisans.

It honors the gifts of nature.

And it embodies a vision for a better future.

Although our visit lasted only two days, we left feeling inspired and grateful. We hope to return in the future and spend more time learning from the artisans, their communities, and their approach to mindful craftsmanship.
