TRATAK KRIYA FOR BETTER EYE VISION & IMPROVED EYESIGHT

Trataka is a kriya with numerous advantages. Yogis have traditionally practiced it in various ways not only for its beneficial effects on the eyes, but also for its tremendous effect on improving concentration.

TRATAK KRIYA FOR BETTER EYE VISION & IMPROVED EYESIGHT

  • Place yourself in a meditation position in front of a candle. Position the candle about an arm's length away from you, with the wick at the same height as your chest. If the candle is placed too high, it can cause tension at the brow's centre or a burning sensation in the eyes. The flame should be perfectly still and not moving in a draught. Put your hands over your eyes and close them. As you would in meditation, mentally repeat your Mantra.

  • Without blinking, open your eyes and look at the flame. The flame is divided into three colour zones. The wick is a reddish colour at the base, bright white in the middle, and slightly smoky at the tip. Concentrate on the brightest part of the flame, which is at the top.

  • Close the eyes again. If the image of the flame appears within, gently concentrate on that image without creating any tension. Try not to pursue or hold onto the image, otherwise it will fade and disappear.

  • Repeat the practice 3 times.

Cupping or Palming the Eyes:

After completing the Trataka practice, palming or cupping the eyes is performed. It is a technique for relaxing the eyes after they have moved. It is also done before opening one's eyes after meditation. Gently rub the palms together to generate heat, then place the palms on the eyes in such a way that the palms do not touch but form a "cup," shielding the eyes. Maintain this posture for 5 to 10 seconds. This practise will be repeated as needed. However, once or twice is sufficient.

Eyewash:

It feels good to splash water in your eyes. However, it is recommended to wash the eyes by taking a sip of room temperature drinking water in one palm and dipping the eye into it for a few seconds. When it's in the water, blink a couple of times. Rep with the opposite eye.
