Little by little ― 少しずつ感じ始めた変化

Small Changes That Began with the Breath: A Yogi’s Story
This is the story of one yogi who began practicing breathing techniques after meeting Varada-sensei, and who, little by little, began noticing changes in her everyday life.
She did not begin with complete confidence in the practice. Nor did she experience an immediate transformation.
In fact, her journey began with a simple question: “Is there really any point in continuing to do this?”
When Simply Getting Through the Day Felt Difficult
When she first met Varada-sensei, she had just gone through an extremely difficult and painful experience. She was exhausted, both physically and emotionally. Even getting out of bed each morning felt like an enormous struggle.
About a month earlier, she had also suffered a severe lower back strain. Simply making it through each day had become incredibly difficult. Concerned about her wellbeing, a colleague she had confided in suggested: “I think Varada-sensei might be exactly the right person for you.”
At the time, the two colleagues barely knew each other.
Even so, someone had noticed that she was struggling, cared enough to reach out, and had the courage to recommend trying something new. That small act of kindness became the beginning of her journey with Varada-sensei and breathing practice.
“What Am I Supposed to Get Out of This?”
Before meeting Varada-sensei, she had never even heard of breathing practice.
She began with private, one-on-one lessons. But at first, she honestly did not understand what she was supposed to be experiencing.
Her nose was congested. She could barely breathe properly. The lessons felt incredibly long.
At one point, she even found herself wondering:
“Is there really any point in continuing to do this?”
Still, she decided to continue a little longer.
After several lessons, Varada-sensei said something simple:
“You’re doing really well. Your face looks much softer.”
At that time, those few words of encouragement meant more than she could have imagined.
Little by Little, Something Began to Change
After about a month of breathing practice, she began to notice something. Her mood seemed to be gradually becoming more stable.
A few months later, she transitioned from private lessons to group classes, where she had more opportunities to experience Varada-sensei’s passion and dedication as a teacher. And what she learned extended beyond breathing techniques.
Through personal guidance and counseling, Varada sensei offered advice on her eating habits, the way she approached different situations, and her overall outlook on daily life.
Of course, the practice was not always perfect.
“I can be rather lazy about practicing,” she admits with a smile.
Still, she continued practicing breathing exercises in the morning and evening whenever she could.
Not perfectly. Not forcefully.
Just little by little.
As she continued, she was surprised by how much calmer she felt and how much more emotionally stable she seemed to become.
People around her also began commenting on physical changes, asking, “Have you lost weight?”
She began noticing changes in her body herself, even though she had not started any particular exercise routine.
An Unexpected Change in Her Health Journey
One of the most surprising experiences came through her regular blood tests.
She has lived with a chronic medical condition since her late twenties and takes medication every day. For around ten years, her blood test results had remained relatively stable.
However, in the months before meeting Varada-sensei, some of her test results began showing abnormal values.
After two consecutive results that caused concern, her doctor told her that if the third test showed similar results, they might need to consider increasing her medication. It was during this period that she met Varada-sensei and began breathing practice.
A few months later, she underwent her third blood test. To her surprise, the values that had previously caused concern had improved significantly.
As a result, there was no need to increase her medication, and she was able to continue with the same dosage as before.
Of course, it is not possible to attribute changes in medical test results to any single factor.
For her, however, the experience became an important opportunity to reflect on the relationship between her emotional wellbeing, her daily habits, and the way she cared for herself.
A Teacher Who Is Kind—and Sometimes Strict
When she speaks about Varada-sensei, she describes her as:
“Warm-hearted, kind, and sometimes wonderfully strict.”
During one of their counseling sessions, she once told her: “I never imagined you would be such a strict teacher.”
Varada-sensei replied:
“If a teacher isn’t strict, how are the students supposed to grow?”
Those words stayed with her.
They helped her understand that Varada sensei’s strictness came from how seriously she took her responsibility as a teacher, and how deeply she cared about the growth of her students.
Sometimes strict. Sometimes gentle.
But always guiding her students with warmth, sincerity, and genuine care.
For this yogi, meeting a teacher like Varada sensei became just as meaningful as the practice itself.
Wellness Can Travel Between People
There is another important person in this story: the colleague who first suggested meeting Varada-sensei.
At the time, they barely knew each other. Yet that colleague noticed that someone was struggling and chose to reach out.
Today, she describes that same colleague as one of the most special and precious people in her life -someone who inspires her, brings happiness into her days, and with whom conversations sometimes seem to never end.
One thoughtful recommendation led to a new teacher.
A new teacher introduced a new practice.
And that practice gradually became part of everyday life.
Perhaps wellness does not always begin with a big decision. Sometimes, it begins with someone simply noticing another person and saying:
“Maybe this could help you.”
And from there, care travels from one person to another.
One Breath at a Time
Even today, she admits that she can sometimes be a little lazy with her practice.
And that is okay.
Her intention is not to practice perfectly or to push herself beyond her limits.
It is simply to continue.
“From here on, I will continue with my breathing practice little by little, without rushing and without pushing myself too hard.”
We do not always need to make dramatic changes.
We do not need to practice perfectly every single day.
Sometimes, taking just a few moments to notice the breath can be a small opportunity to reconnect with ourselves.
And sometimes, that first step begins with the kindness of another person.

Beautifully written. What I particularly liked was the reminder that meaningful change doesn't always need to begin with something big. Sometimes it can begin simply by becoming aware of our breath.
In our busy lives, we often look outside ourselves for solutions, while something as fundamental as breathing is always with us. Small, conscious changes practiced consistently can gradually influence the way we live, respond, and relate to ourselves.
Thank you for sharing such a simple yet important perspective.
